Manual for the use and maintenance of hearing aids for nursing homes and home care

In Norway, there are eight different hearing aid suppliers in 2026, offering a wide range of hearing aids and accessories. The great diversity gives users choices, but also creates challenges for hearing aid users, relatives, peers and healthcare professionals who guide use and maintenance. Many find it challenging to keep track of which batteries, filters, domes and other accessories are suitable for different devices, especially among municipal healthcare personnel without specialist expertise and peers.

To meet this need, AudioPlus Norge AS developed the "Manual for maintenance and service of hearing aids" in 2025, a physical guide distributed to hearing aid associations and peers across the country. The feedback has been very positive, and several have requested additional copies for use in municipal health services.

The number of elderly hearing aid users, and many do not master simple maintenance tasks. Experiences from practical hearing courses in care services show low competence and lack of access to information regarding hearing and hearing aids among healthcare personnel, which often leads to poorly functioning hearing aids and reduced quality of life for users. In the worst case, this creates an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia due to lack of use of hearing aids.

On this basis, the project updates and expands the manual. The finished manual will be printed in A5 format in up to 5,000 copies, and will also be available online. Hearing groups with peers will distribute the manual to local health and care units, including nursing homes, home services and municipal hearing contact. In municipalities without hearing groups, the manual will be sent directly to the relevant unit leaders.

The finished manual will also be available digitally on the VAR Healthcare system for healthcare professionals, as well as on other suitable digital platforms for healthcare professionals.
