Ambulatory hearing courses for healthcare personnel in nursing homes
The starting point for the project was that the COVID-19 pandemic made it challenging for older hearing aid users living in nursing homes to access hearing healthcare professionals. This situation increased the risk of missing out on oral information, and reduced opportunities to communicate and participate in social communities.
To compensate for this, the project developed and implemented “learning by doing” courses for healthcare personnel at nursing homes in the use and maintenance of hearing aids. They have also been given access to a service bag for hearing aid maintenance.
The course was well received at 66 nursing homes in Trøndelag and Innlandet.
Participants have particularly highlighted the value of the course's practical approach, with exercises in the use and care of hearing aids, as well as a focus on good routines in everyday work. Access to a service bag with equipment and routine forms has also been very positively received.
The goal was to reach 150 nursing homes and 1,500 participants. This goal was not fully achieved, due to, among other things, resource-intensive coordination, sick leave that led to postponements, and periods of restrictions related to the corona pandemic. To ensure the best possible effect, the project chose to alternatively increase access to service bags, so that more nursing home departments had access to the necessary equipment.
The evaluations show consistently good feedback. Several nursing homes have expressed a desire for repeated courses, partly due to staff turnover. There has also been interest from home care staff who want similar training and access to a service bag. This indicates that the project's approach will be relevant even after the corona epidemic.
