Through this project, we aim to continue and further develop the pilot project Digital Hearing Coffee for hearing aid users and those close to them.

Over the past year, participants have had the opportunity to take part in sessions and learn more about various topics related to hearing, hearing aids, and hearing rehabilitation. This may have made everyday life with hearing loss and hearing aids somewhat easier for them.

Among the participants have been many working-age adults who struggle with social exclusion, burnout, and stress, and who are at risk of falling out of the workforce. Due to a lack of workplace accommodation and inclusion, they may risk becoming permanently unable to work at an early age. There are many powerful and moving stories.

Through participating in Digital Hearing Coffee, they have received advice from both speakers and fellow participants on how to take action, obtain appropriate accommodations, experience greater inclusion, and achieve a better everyday life, both in their leisure time and at work.

The aim of this new project is to increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of hearing, hearing aids, hearing rehabilitation, and other relevant topics, while also providing a digital social meeting place where participants can meet others in similar situations.

The target group is hearing aid users and their close relations who want to learn more about various topics related to hearing. Participants will primarily consist of 300–350 adults from across Norway. They will take part in courses and lectures on a range of hearing-related topics delivered through a digital video meeting platform. The project will run from April 2022 through March 2023, with approximately 30–40 different courses and lectures being held.

It is expected that both hearing aid users and their close relations will gain increased knowledge, confidence, and ability to cope with hearing loss, the use of hearing aids and other hearing-related assistive devices, as well as the psychosocial aspects of living with hearing loss. Through participation and meaningful conversations during the Digital Hearing Coffee sessions, they will also have the opportunity to find a social meeting place with others in similar situations.
