Are you going to a concert or festival this year?

Summer is the peak season for concerts, festivals, and other events. Live music and a great atmosphere are something many people look forward to – but it is also important to remember to protect your hearing.

Our hearing is highly sensitive to loud sounds. At concerts and festivals, sound levels can often be high enough for noise-induced hearing damage to occur quickly, sometimes after relatively short exposure. Many people are surprised by how little exposure it can take before their hearing is affected.

An important thing to be aware of is that noise-induced hearing damage cannot be repaired. Once the damage has occurred, it is permanent. Such damage can also develop over time and lead to persistent problems such as hearing loss and/or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

That is why prevention and awareness are so important.

Simple measures can make a big difference

There are several ways to reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing damage when attending a concert or festival:

  • Choose your position carefully – Where you stand during a concert can make a significant difference. The closer you are to the speakers, the higher the sound level. Moving a little further back can make a big difference for your ears.

  • Take breaks – Give your ears regular breaks from loud music. Spending a few minutes in a quieter environment can help reduce the strain on your hearing.

  • Use hearing protection – Good hearing protection can significantly reduce sound levels without taking away from the music experience. It is important to use earplugs correctly – for example, foam earplugs need to be properly inserted into the ear canal. They provide little protection if they are simply resting in the outer part of the ear.

Many great solutions are available

Today, there are several types of earplugs and hearing protection specifically designed for concerts and music experiences. These reduce sound levels while preserving as much of the sound quality as possible.
