Do you experience tinnitus distress and/or racing thoughts at night? Do you find it difficult to get a good night's sleep because of noticeable tinnitus sounds, excessive worrying, or racing thoughts? A sound generator with a sound pillow may be the solution.

Sound generator with sound pillow

What is a sound generator with a sound pillow?

A sound generator with a pillow speaker is also referred to as a sound pillow. It is a Bluetooth speaker containing 20 therapeutic nature sounds. It is equipped with an input for a pillow speaker or headphones (3.5 mm jack). The sound generator is rechargeable via USB cable, with a battery life of 7–8 hours. It can also be connected to smartphones or tablets for playing music.

Who can benefit from a sound generator with a sound pillow?

If you experience intrusive tinnitus when falling asleep or during the night, or perhaps a lot of racing thoughts or rumination that makes it difficult to get enough sleep over a shorter or longer period, actively using and playing nature sounds through a sound generator with a pillow speaker may be a good solution for sleep difficulties. Unfortunately, poor sleep over time can cause both tinnitus distress and racing thoughts to become more pronounced.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head without an external sound source. It may sound like ringing, hissing, whistling, buzzing, throbbing, or music in the ear. This can be particularly bothersome in quiet surroundings, as the brain may perceive the sounds more clearly when there are no background sounds. As a result, tinnitus may become more noticeable when you put your head on the pillow at night, making it difficult to achieve natural, restful sleep.

Racing thoughts at night occur when your brain remains restless and continues to produce many thoughts, particularly worries or rumination about past or future events. This can make it difficult to fall asleep and disrupt your night's sleep. It is often associated with stress and can feel like a train of thoughts without a pause, interfering with concentration and contributing to restlessness and poor sleep patterns.

If you struggle with racing thoughts or excessive thinking at night, these may be reduced by accepting thoughts as they are, practising relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, and establishing good sleep habits by avoiding stimulants such as caffeine in the evening.

Using a sound generator with a sound pillow can be an additional helpful tool for shifting your focus away from tinnitus distress and/or racing thoughts, helping you achieve more regular sleep and better sleep quality over time.

How can you obtain a sound generator with a sound pillow?

A public ENT specialist or audiologist can apply to NAV for a sound generator with a pillow speaker. This is covered by the National Insurance Scheme. A referral from your GP to an ENT specialist is required, and some waiting time should be expected.

You can also purchase a sound generator and pillow speaker privately from audioplus.no. Guidance from an authorised audiologist is also available if needed.

Are there any disadvantages to using a sound generator with a sound pillow?

These nature sounds may be bothersome to a partner sleeping in the same bedroom if you need to use a high volume through the pillow speaker due to hearing loss.

How do you use a sound generator with a sound pillow?

Connect the sound generator to the sound pillow. Then select and play your preferred nature sound, such as a calming background sound or tinnitus masker, which will be played softly through the pillow. The sound should be barely audible. This creates a personal and discreet listening experience, ideal for masking other disturbing sounds or helping you relax before falling asleep. The nature sound can be played throughout the night.
