Hearing-related assistive devices – an extra layer of security in everyday life

Do you have difficulty hearing the stove alarm in the kitchen, or when someone rings the doorbell? Many types of hearing loss affect the frequency range in which alarms are heard. As a result, alarms from household appliances or machinery at work, fire alarms, alarm clocks, or doorbells can be difficult to hear.

There are various alerting solutions available for people with hearing loss. At home, you may need alerts for a fire alarm or doorbell. It is important to have your need for alerting systems at home assessed – not only for the person with hearing loss, but also for the safety of family members and close neighbours. If you have hearing loss, it is essential to be alerted in ways other than sound alone.

There are dedicated bed shakers that use vibration to alert you to events such as a fire or someone ringing the doorbell. The device is placed under your pillow or mattress. In the event of a fire, it provides a powerful vibration alert. It can also be connected to an alarm clock and baby monitor.

Another assistive device provides alerts through light, text, symbols, sound, and voice messages for events such as fires or someone ringing the doorbell. It distinguishes between serious events, defined as alarms, and everyday events such as the doorbell, baby monitor, and telephone.

People with hearing loss may also need assistive devices to hear speech on the TV or additional support for hearing conversations in challenging listening situations. There are many good solutions available.
