Hearing and noise

Noise – An Invisible Threat to Your Hearing
Many people think that hearing loss is simply a result of ageing. Did you know that many hearing problems are caused by noise – from work, hobbies, and everyday life? We’ll take a closer look at how noise affects your hearing and what you can do to protect it – regardless of age.
What happens in the ear when it is exposed to noise?
When the ear is exposed to loud sounds, the delicate hair cells in the inner ear can become damaged. These cells are responsible for sending sound signals to the brain. Once they are damaged, the damage is often permanent, and the cells do not grow back.
This can lead to reduced hearing and may also cause bothersome ringing or other sounds in the ears (tinnitus).

How much sound is too much?
How harmful sound is depends not only on how loud it is, but also on how long you are exposed to it. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that you should not be exposed to sound levels above 85 dB for more than 8 hours. This is roughly equivalent to the sound of a lawn mower.
The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time you can be exposed to it before it becomes harmful to your hearing.

Typical sources of noise in everyday life can include:
Music at concerts or through AirPods
Power tools and gardening
Motorised recreational equipment
Noisy working environments
