Did you know that hearing loss can increase your risk of dementia? Research in recent years has shown a clear link between hearing loss and cognitive decline – that is, impairment of memory, thinking and concentration. The good news is that it appears that treating hearing loss can reduce this risk.

What does the research say?

Several large studies, including the Trøndelag Health Study, show that people with untreated hearing loss have a significantly increased risk of dementia. In one study, people with moderate hearing loss had up to 36% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those with normal hearing.

The reason is probably complex:

Social isolation: When hearing is impaired, people often withdraw from conversations and social interactions. Loneliness itself increases the risk of dementia.
Cognitive strain: When the brain has to work extra hard to interpret poor hearing, it “steals” resources from other important processes – such as memory and attention.
Brain changes: Studies using MRI scans have shown that people with untreated hearing loss may experience faster loss of brain tissue in areas important for language and memory.

What can be done?

The most important thing is to detect hearing loss early and take action:

Take a simple hearing test – it only takes a few minutes
Studies have shown that using hearing aids can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.
Reduce noise exposure in everyday life – and use hearing protection when needed
You can have a hearing test carried out by private audiologists, private specialists under public agreements, or at public hearing centres.
