Do you or someone you know experience challenges related to hearing, sound sensitivity, tinnitus, or speech perception? Then an audiopedagogue can be an important resource.

What is an audiopedagogue? An audiopedagogue is a specialist in hearing and communication who works with people of all ages experiencing hearing-related challenges. The goal is to facilitate optimal functioning, coping and participation in everyday life – whether in kindergarten, school, the workplace or social settings.

What does an audiopedagogue do?An audiopedagogue may, among other things, work with:

  • Assessing listening and communication skills and challenges.

  • Providing treatment and coping strategies for tinnitus and/or sound sensitivity.

  • Facilitating good listening and communication environments in kindergarten, schools and the workplace.

  • Providing guidance to relatives and support networks, such as family members, employers and teachers.

  • Training in the use of hearing aids and other assistive listening devices.

  • Advising on communication techniques and coping strategies.

Follow-up is tailored to the individual and can be important for speech perception, quality of life, managing everyday situations, and learning and development.

How do you get a referral? To see an audiopedagogue through the public healthcare system, a referral must be made by a GP or ENT specialist. The doctor assesses the need and sends the referral to the appropriate service. You can also contact private audiopedagogues directly, without a referral from a doctor. It is worth noting that many private audiopedagogues have public reimbursement agreements through Helfo, meaning that consultations may be covered by the public healthcare system.
